For many years, Birney M. Jarvis, Jr. worked on steamers in Puget Sound's mosquito fleet. The ships he sailed on included the "Flyer," "Cricket," "Multnomah," "State of Washington," and many others. Jarvis was born in 1872, and died in Tacoma in 1957.
In 1898, Birney Jarvis had his portrait taken by Charles McMillan, a Vallejo, California, photographer. Jarvis wears his uniform as he stands in front of the studio backdrop. At that time, he would have been about 26 years old.
