When Bob told a joke
| Notes |
---|
After finishing high school and marrying Florence, he worked for the Oregon Journal, distributing newspapers in Portland, then later in Toledo (near Newport), and Corvallis. In the last year of World War II, he joined the Navy voluntarily (he wasn't drafted because he had a wife and then two daughters). They gave him aptitude tests and sent him to school to learn electronics, although Florence questioned his aptitude in this area ("That man couldn't fix a toaster!"). Then the war ended, and he was discharged. The only time he spent on a boat was the trip back to Bremerton for his discharge, during which time he was violently seasick. But his service in the military paid for his college: first he completed a correspondence course to become a Certified Public Accountant; the he took law classes at night at the Northwest School of Law (which later became Lewis and Clark college) and earned his law degree. | Sources |
