The stairway continues upward, so Elbolin continues up to the next floor. At the top of the stairs, he enters a room that appears like an office, but strangely and lavishly furnished. There is a very fancy writing desk, several smaller endtables, and four beautiful but uncomfortable-looking carved wooden chairs. It definitely looks like the office of somebody important.
Elbolin sifts through the papers on the table. Most of them are lists of items, like inventories, but he finds one written in draconic, with detailed diagrams. Elfo follows along shortly, so Elbolin asks him to read the draconic. He says that it appears to be instructions for using some sort of portal, including in large letters, a special word "DRAEZIR". Elbolin takes the drawing. The others follow up the stairs and examine the rest of the room, but find nothing else interesting.
There are two doorways from this room, and Elfo goes through one of them. He finds what appears to be a sitting room, devoid of anything but two chairs that look quite comfortable for reading, a couple padded benches, and two small carpet-draped tables. The furnishings are of the highest quality, but there are no decorations or other clutter.
There is another doorway at the back of the sitting room, so Elfo explores back there. He finds a small room, maybe 10 feet square, which seems to be completely bare. Only when he comes entirely inside, he notices that there is painting on the back of the door. It is painted in few colors, and rather crudely, Elfo thinks, given the lavishness of the other furniture. The painting depicts a five-headed dragon rising from a volcano, with each head a different color. |
