Around 7am, the adventurers start to hear activity in the central area of the Carnath Roadhouse, as carts are pulled in and loaded with building materials. Around 8am Gristle Pete calls everyone to breakfast, and by 8:30 the carts are pulling out, loaded for the day's work on the road. Bog Luck and Ardred are seen a few times among the loading teams, counting the load or inspecting the items, but they don't go out with the carts. Leosin can be seen out on the second floor balcony, smoking his pipe and watching the processes below, coughing occasionally. The adventurers stay at breakfast until nearly everyone is gone, and the Roadhouse is relatively quiet. Gristle Pete cleans up after breakfast.
Elbolin tells his friends about what he saw in the storage room during the night, including the locked door. "We should see if we can get in there," suggests Barry.
Hooflepoof slips on his Cloak of Invisibility and sneaks down to the storage room. The door is slightly ajar, and he moves through it without making any noise. Bog Luck is in there with his ledger book, examining the boxes, closing up some of the ones that were left open when they were unloaded and inspected, counting things, and scribbling in his book. It's apparent to Hooflepoof that he probably can't get through the locked door with Bog there, so he heads back up to the dining area to see if someone can come down and distract him.
Elbolin goes down to the storage room and pokes his head in the door. "Hey Bog, you in here?"
"Yep," answers Bog, "just workin' on stuff. What you need?"
"Oh, just saying hi. Curious how this place works."
"Well, you're seein' it. The guys work on the road every day except Sunday, and I keep things organized around here."
"What kind of stuff you have in here?"
"Mostly food, but anything we can't leave out in the open."
"I bet you have to watch out for rats."
"Oh yeah, we're feedin' a lot of rats around here. We're sharin' with them, fer shure."
Elbolin isn't having much luck distracting Bog from his task. "Where did you say the stable was? I want to check on our horses."
Bog Luck points through the wall toward where the stable door is. "Right over there. Go on in."
So Elbolin goes over to the stable. Most of the horses are gone, out to work on the road, all except their two. Somewhere in the stable, he can hear somebody shoveling manure or horse bedding. He snuggles their horses a little bit and heads back to the dinner hall, where they reconsider their plan. Bog Luck can't stay in there forever, they figure, so every few minutes, they send somebody out to just walk to their rooms or whatever as if they are on some mission, and try to sneak a peak on the way by to see if Bog is still in the store room. Every time they pass, the door is still slightly open, so whether they see Bog or not, they assume he is still in there. Then after an hour or so, they notice the door is closed.
Hooflepoof, invisible again, sneaks down there. The storage room door isn't locked, so he quietly opens it, steps through, and closes it behind him. The other door is still locked, and the lock is difficult to pick, but after a few minutes with his lock picking kit, it gives, and Hooflepoof steps into the space beyond, closing the door behind him.
Fortunately Hooflepoof has a few candles with him, so he lights one and looks around the room. The room is basically empty, except for a large crate against the far wall, and a cabinet against one of the others. He checks the cabinet; it isn't locked. Inside are shelves with a few small items. Books, photos, purses, belts, the sort of things that someone would take with them when traveling which aren't too valuable, but which one wouldn't want to lose. With each item, or a few items grouped together, is a small card on which is written a name, a number, and a date. Likely Bog Luck is storing these items for the workers, for safekeeping.
He then examines the crate. There is no lock, and the lid lifts easily. The crate is empty. He looks around the room again to see if there are any other clues around, but doesn't see much. There are no windows, no doors except the one where he entered, and not even any holes that would be large enough for rats to enter. He knocks on the walls, and they seem very solid. Unlike the rest of the Carnath Roadhouse, which is loosely hewn like a large drafty barn, this room is very securely built.
Thinking there might perhaps be something under it, Hooflepoof tries to move the crate, but it doesn't move, even with as much strength as he can get behind it. It is fixed in place somehow. |
