The dead ogre, upon a closer look, turns into a medium-sized humanoid with dark grey skin. A doppelganger!

At almost the same time, the other ogre (who is too far away to see that her companion has been killed, and the secret revealed) turns back to the form of a buxom lady. "Help!" she calls out, "I've been cursed to turn into a vicious ogre! I'm innocent!"

But the adventurers are not convinced. They quickly kill her, and she too turns into a dead doppelganger. Karat, Bilbo, Black Barry, and Hooflepoof go up to the ladies' camp and look around. They find a few cases of normal vegetables and spices to make soup, plus a rack of mysterious chemicals labeled in an unknown language, and what appears to be a cookbook, but also in an unknown language. Karat takes the chemicals, and Black Barry takes the cookbook.

Hooflepoof leads a group to dig a hole in the woods to bury the doppelgangers.

Later on around the campfire, Carlon (the man they found buried up to the neck in the road) approaches Black Barry. "I saw your pendant. Are you a Harper?"

"Kind of. I wanted to be, but I don't know now."

Carlon is surprised by this. "Well, did you take the oath?"

"Yes," Black Barry admits.

"Well, just so you know, there are no ex-Harpers," Carlon says with an air of disgust. He gets up and moves away from Black Barry.

When the adventurers awaken the next morning, Elfo notices that his Spider Staff is missing.
