"We don't have anywhere to stay yet," answers Hooflepoof, "we just came into town".
"Well, then you're in luck!" says Ontharr, "I've got a few rooms to spare, and any friend of Leosin is a friend of mine! By the way, are you hungry? We've got the best food in Elturel!"
"Are you sure you want to do that?" asks Hooflepoof. There are five more of us outside..."
"Ah yes, Leosin said we could expect about seven. Do you have horses?"
Ontharr and the adventurers go outside, everyone gets introduced, and they bring the horses around the back, to the tavern's stable. As they are bringing the cart in, Ontharr notices a large object under a blanket. "What's under that blanket? Does it need to come inside?"
"Oh, it's nothing special," says Elbolin, "just provisions and stuff. But we'd rather it not get stolen, will it be safe in here?"
"Well, not a lot of crime in this neighborhood, really," says Ontharr, "but we'll lock it up tight anyway."
Ontharr serves them a splendid dinner, and his energetic friendliness is contagious. Some might settle down by the fire and read a book after dinner, but not Ontharr. "Hey," he says, "anybody want to arm-wrestle?"
The adventurers look around at each other, and Hooflepoof steps up. "Sure, I'll take you on!"
"Well what are we wrestling for?" asks Ontharr. "Let's put 10 gold pieces up to make it interesting!"
Hooflepoof agrees, and after a hearty battle, he manages to best Ontharr. Ontharr doesn't like to lose, but more than that he likes to play, and his attitude is undeterred. "You just got lucky," he says, "All right, who's next?"
Elbolin also takes him on, and also beats him, but Ontharr isn't discouraged. He is a strong guy, and he's obviously having a blast.
During a break between matches, Elfo asks Ontharr about the dragon cult. "Oh, we haven't seen any around Elturel. But we've sure heard about what they're doing around the realm. Hey, anybody want to spar?"
He pulls out a couple of sporting swords and hands one to Bilbo, who agrees to put 10 gold pieces down on a match. She thinks at first that she may have taken on more than she realized, as Ontharr's energetic sparring is difficult to keep up with, but somehow she gains the advantage, and the 10 gold pieces. Then Hooflepoof steps up, but Ontharr disposes of him handily. Having finally won one, Ontharr collapses cheerfully in a chair. "Ah thanks you guys, you're good sports, but I had better rest for a bit. How about some ales? And surely you have some good stories to tell!"
The ales go around, and Elbolin tells him about the time they cast spells of both invisibility and flying on a couple of horses and used them to airlift prisoners out of the dragon cultists' camp. Ontharr is amused and impressed. |
