The camp is mostly dark, with just a few torches around, and flickering lights inside a few of the tents. Holding each other's cloaks to make an invisible conga line, the adventurers sneak over to where they saw the monk chained to the pole. He is still there.
Hooflepoof whispers, "Are you Leosin? I'm Hooflepoof the Great, and I'm here to rescue you."
"Yes, I am, nice to meet you," he whispers back. "What's your plan? They're keeping a close eye on me here, and will certainly notice pretty quickly if I go missing."
Hooflepoof hands him a potion of invisibility, instructing him to grab onto his cloak, and to drink the potion when he's ready to bolt. Leosin downs the bottle in one quaff and disappears, and they all dash as quickly as they can for the exit where they came in. Elfo leads the way, followed by Karat, who accidentally bumps one of the guards in trying to pass. "Hey, somebody bumped me," he says to the other guards, and then one of them says "Hey where's the monk?"
Suspecting an escape attempt, they immediately close ranks and try to completely block the entrance. Karat and Elfo slip through before they can get arranged, but Bilbo, Hooflepoof, and Leosin stop a few paces inside and can see no route to escape. The guards don't really consider invisibility, rather suspecting that it is only the darkness preventing them from seeing the monk, and one of them steps away a few paces to grab a torch, hoping to put a little light on the subject. Hooflepoof takes advantage of the gap in their line and bolts past them, dragging Leosin and Bilbo behind him. Once outside the camp, they can't see where Elfo and Karat are, but somebody yells "RUN!" and they scramble as quickly as possible back to their camp.
By the time they return, the invisibility spells are wearing off, and everybody is exhausted, so after tending to Leosin's wounds, they climb into their tents for the rest of the night.
They awaken at dawn and talk to Leosin over breakfast. He explains that getting captured wasn't entirely an accident; he actually came to Greenest because he was suspecting they would attack there, and intentionally fell in with them when they returned so that he could investigate their camp. What he didn't expect was that Rezmir would recognize him and subject him to such vicious torture in order to find out what he knows about the dragon cult. He'd like to continue to investigate, but at this point he's so weak and beat up that he needs to go back to Greenest for a few days of rest. They ask him about the prisoners, and he explains that they seem to be using them just for manual labor, and working them very hard. He also asks them if they noticed the cave at the back of the camp, sort of behind the big tent. They had not noticed. Leosin doesn't know what's in the cave, but he had seen the cultists carrying what appeared to be Greenest loot in that direction, and had heard the cultists refer to it as the "hatchery".
Hooflepoof volunteers to escort Leosin back to Greenest, but then they discuss going back into the camp, to try to rescue the prisoners, and bomb the cave. They decide Hooflepoof should be in the camp-raiding group since he has the bomb, and instead Karat and Elbolin agree to go with Leosin. Gourbain and Nars stay to guard the carts, and Black Barry, Hooflepoof, Bilbo, and Elfo prepare to go back to the camp.
They again decide to go around to the back trail rather than the main entrance, and just before they reach the entrance, Elfo casts a spell of Invisibility over himself, Black Barry, and Bilbo. Hooflepoof puts on his cloak of Invisibility, and they sneak past the guards.
They first head over toward the cave, and even from a distance they can see a dragonclaw - a rather dangerous humanoid fanatic - lurking in the shadows of the cave. They venture further, and find that there are two such guards, though of course the guards don't notice the invisible adventurers. The cave goes deeper than they expected; they go inside nearly 50 feet, where they find some stairs leading down, and almost concealed in the half-light, a passage leading to the southwest. They decide to explore the passage. It is completely dark, so only those with night-vision can see anything, and narrow enough for only one person to pass, so they walk in single file. After about 25 feet there is a fork, and they take the passage to the left. It leads to a room that appears to be some sort of barracks, with three guards and eight cultists relaxing on bunks. The adventurers retreat without being noticed, and explore the passage to the right. A little way further, they find a storage room piled with what appears to be Greenest loot, and one sleeping cultist. Only Elfo and Black Barry, having nightvision, can see at all; Bilbo and Hooflepoof are completely blind. Elfo and Black Barry don't dare to even whisper lest they awaken the cultist and he sounds some sort of alarm, though he has an empty bottle of wine near him and appears to have been celebrating a little too hard. Elfo quickly hits him with Talon, killing the cultist in his sleep.
They are still quiet lest they be heard by the guards in the other room, but Elfo and Black Barry gather up loot and place it in the hands of the others. Black Barry takes about 100 lbs of loot himself and gives about 100 lbs to Hooflepoof, who puts it in his Bag of Holding. Elfo can only take 18 lbs himself, but he also gives 100 lbs to Bilbo and another 100 lbs to Hooflepoof.
